The Richard Mille RM 011 arrived in 2007 as the brand's first flyback chronograph and quickly became the most recognizable watch in the entire collection. Developed in collaboration with Brazilian Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa, Richard Mille's first athlete partner, the RM 011 followed the FM-signed tourbillons RM 006 (2004) and RM 009 (2005). Where those earlier pieces were exotic and rare, the RM 011 was conceived as Richard Mille's everyday automatic chronograph, translating the discipline of motorsport engineering into a wearable, high-frequency complication.
The watch is built around the skeletonised automatic RMAC1 caliber with a variable-geometry rotor, allowing the winding efficiency to be tuned to the wearer's activity. Its function set is unusually rich for a sports chronograph: hours, minutes and seconds, a flyback chronograph, a 60-minute countdown timer at 9 o'clock, a 12-hour totaliser, an oversize date and a month indicator, the calendar indications being an annual calendar. The flyback pusher between 4 and 5 o'clock resets and restarts the chronograph in a single action, a function originally created for pilots. The tonneau case, roughly 50mm by 40mm and 16.15mm thick, is curved across the bezel, sides and caseback for ergonomic comfort.
Over more than a decade the RM 011 became a platform for some of Richard Mille's most collected releases. The 2008 Le Mans Classic was the brand's first watch tied to the historic vintage-racing meeting, limited to 200 pieces. Anniversary, regional and themed editions followed, alongside the material revolution that defined the model: titanium, red gold, ceramic, silicon nitride and the layered Carbon TPT and Quartz TPT composites. When the naming convention was reorganised in 2013, the line continued as the RM 11-01 Roberto Mancini, the RM 11-02 dual-time, the wider RM 11-03 with the RMAC3 movement, the RM 11-04 and finally the RM 11-05 in grey Cermet. Collectors prize the RM 011 for being the reference that established Richard Mille's signature aesthetic and made the brand's racing identity tangible on the wrist.
