Brand History

Vacheron Constantin's story begins on 17 September 1755, when 24-year-old Jean-Marc Vacheron set up a small watchmaking workshop in Geneva and signed a contract with his first apprentice. That date is a turning point in horological history: Vacheron Constantin is the oldest watch manufacturer in continuous production in the world, 150 years older than Rolex, 84 years older than Patek Philippe, and 120 years older than Audemars Piguet.

Jean-Marc Vacheron was part of the 18th-century Geneva "cabinotier" tradition: master watchmakers who worked in top-floor attic workshops called "cabinets." In 1770 Vacheron produced one of the world's first complicated watches, and in 1779 he developed the first engraved watch movement. In 1785 his son Abraham Vacheron took over the business, and the brand survived the upheavals of the French Revolution.

The defining moment for the company came in 1819, when Jean-Marc's grandson Jacques-Barthélémy Vacheron entered into partnership with the talented businessman François Constantin. Constantin's vision for global markets combined with Vacheron's technical mastery, and the company was renamed "Vacheron & Constantin." A line from one of Constantin's letters became the brand's enduring motto: "Faire mieux si possible, ce qui est toujours possible," meaning "Do better if possible, which is always possible."

In 1880 Vacheron Constantin registered its iconic Maltese Cross (Croix de Malte) logo, still in use today. The symbol is an abstraction of a real watch component, the Maltese-cross-shaped piece that prevents overwinding of the mainspring barrel. The logo represents the brand's technical heritage and its commitment to quality marks such as the Geneva Seal.

Through the 20th century, Vacheron Constantin remained one of the quietest yet most respected houses in haute horlogerie. In 1955, to celebrate its 200th anniversary, it introduced one of the world's thinnest movements: caliber 1003, only 1.64mm thick. In 2004 the brand launched the Patrimony collection, drawing on its 1950s ultra-thin dress watch heritage to create an elegant icon defined by clean lines and a slim profile.

In 1977 Vacheron Constantin answered the luxury-steel-sports-watch movement started by the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus with its own model: the 222, designed by Jorg Hysek and released to celebrate the brand's 222nd anniversary, with a small Maltese Cross emblem set into the case at 5 o'clock. Produced in limited numbers, it was eventually withdrawn from the catalog. In 1996, Vacheron Constantin's design team reimagined the 222's DNA to create the Overseas collection. With its Maltese-Cross-shaped bezel, integrated bracelet, and sport-elegant identity, the Overseas is today the brand's most sought-after collection. The Historiques collection, introduced later, reissues vintage designs from the 1950s and 1960s, including the Cornes de Vache and American 1921, which command strong collector demand.

Today Vacheron Constantin is referred to, alongside Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, as part of the "Holy Trinity" of watchmaking. Despite being part of the Richemont group, the brand has preserved its identity and haute horlogerie tradition. Annual production is roughly 25,000 to 30,000 watches, making it the smallest producer of the trinity. Overseas references (especially the 4500V time-only, 7900V chronograph, and 7900V/110A dual time) and the Patrimony are on waiting lists at authorized dealers. Bedesten Watches has served Istanbul collectors since 1999; Overseas, Patrimony, Traditionnelle, and Historiques references are available in our Suadiye showroom.
