F.P. Journe's story is one of the most striking individual journeys in modern watchmaking. François-Paul Journe was born in Marseille, France, in 1957. He fell in love with horology young and trained at the Boulle school in Paris. After graduating he joined his uncle Michel Journe's Parisian restoration workshop, where he worked on 18th and 19th century pieces by Breguet, Berthoud and Janvier. That apprenticeship shaped Journe's lifelong obsession with chronometric precision; he wanted to be Abraham-Louis Breguet's spiritual heir.
While still in his early twenties, Journe began a five-year personal project: to build his first signed work, a pocket-watch tourbillon, entirely from scratch and alone. He completed it in 1983. Over the following years he worked on private commissions and became known in the small circle of independent watchmakers. In 1991 he completed his first tourbillon wristwatch, considered one of the turning points in modern watchmaking (later evolved into the Tourbillon Souverain under the F.P. Journe brand): a tourbillon scaled to wristwatch size and registered as his first signed wristwatch. Fitting a tourbillon into a wristwatch was extremely rare at the time.
In 1999, aged 42, Journe formally launched the F.P. Journe brand in Geneva. As important as the name is the inscription on every dial: "Invenit et Fecit" (Latin: "invented and made"). It certifies that the watch was not merely cased but genuinely invented and built by his manufacture. F.P. Journe is truly in-house: movement plates, bridges, wheels, cases, and even screws are made in his own workshops.
In 2000 Journe introduced the Chronomètre à Résonance, a wristwatch with two separate balance wheels that synchronise through acoustic resonance, a mechanical principle achieved by only three watchmakers in history (Breguet, Berthoud and Journe). In 2001 he launched the Octa family around a five-day automatic calibre, a modular base for Reserve de Marche, Calendrier, Lune and Chronographe complications. The Chronomètre Souverain, whose restrained dial conceals an exceptional twin-barrel manual calibre, followed in 2005 and won the GPHG Men's Watch Prize that same year.
In 2006 the Sonnerie Souveraine, described by Journe himself as "the most difficult mechanical complication of the last twenty years," was patented with ten innovations and remains a grail among specialist collectors. In 2008 the Centigraphe Souverain, with its 1/100th-of-a-second display, won the Aiguille d'Or at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG). From 2003 onward Journe began producing all his movements in solid 18-karat rose gold, an unmistakable visual identity for the brand.
Today F.P. Journe produces only around 900 to 1,000 watches per year, less than a fifth of A. Lange & Söhne's already-small output. F.P. Journe is the purest representative of modern independent watchmaking.
