The F.P. Journe Octa Automatique is one of the most significant achievements in modern independent watchmaking. Its heart, the Octa calibre, was presented in 2001 and powered only the third model from Francois-Paul Journe's eponymous manufacture, founded in Geneva in 1999 after the hand-wound Tourbillon Souverain and the Chronometre a Resonance. The Octa was Journe's first automatic creation, conceived to reach a wider audience while expressing the same uncompromising chronometric philosophy that defined his earlier work.
The technical centrepiece is the Octa calibre 1300, a self-winding movement that delivered a world-first achievement: a stated chronometric power reserve of more than 120 hours, or five days, from a single barrel. Journe achieved this with an unusually long mainspring, giving the movement an effective autonomy of around 160 hours. The original 2001 calibre used a rhodium-plated brass mainplate and bridges with a 22K gold bidirectional rotor positioned off-centre, which freed space to add complications without changing the architecture. Those early brass-movement examples, made only until around 2004, are now among the most coveted F.P. Journe watches.
The Octa was designed as a modular base so that every model could share one case size regardless of complication. The first Octa, the Octa Reserve de Marche, set the now-iconic asymmetric layout: off-centre hours and minutes, a big date, a power-reserve indicator and small seconds at 4:30, originally in a 38mm case in platinum or gold. The family quickly grew to include the Calendrier (annual calendar), the Lune (moon phase), the Chronographe and the time-only Divine, all sharing the same calibre architecture.
The calibre itself evolved through only three iterations. Around 2004-2005, when Journe switched his entire production from brass to 18K rose gold movements, it became the calibre 1300.2. In 2007 a further revision introduced unidirectional winding, creating the calibre 1300.3 that still powers the line today. That same year the Octa Automatique Reserve (Ref. AR) and Octa Automatique Lune (Ref. AL) appeared with central-hands dials inspired by the Chronometre Souverain, and were produced through 2018. In 2021 Journe marked the calibre's 20th anniversary with a 99-piece limited edition in 40mm platinum, reviving the 2001 design with a brass calibre and an 18K yellow-gold guilloche dial. In 2022 the Automatique entered the regular Classique collection in 40mm or 42mm platinum or 18K red gold.
