The F.P. Journe Octa Divine was born from one of the most ambitious projects of independent watchmaking. In 2001, François-Paul Journe set out to build a self-winding movement that was both highly practical and capable of true chronometric precision, resulting in the Octa calibre. Two years later, in 2003, he placed that movement into the Octa Divine, a watch that quietly broke with his own house style.
Until that point F.P. Journe had become famous for off-centre, asymmetric dials on pieces such as the Tourbillon Souverain and the Chronomètre à Résonance. The Octa Divine took the opposite path: it was one of the first Journe watches to use a centrally arranged dial, with central hours and minutes anchoring an elegant, uncluttered layout. Around that centre Journe arranged a remarkable set of complications: an instantaneous large date, a sapphire moon-phase disc, a power-reserve indication of more than five days, and small seconds shown on a disc. The metallised sapphire moon disc advances by one notch each time the date changes, and every indication is set through the crown alone, keeping the case free of pushers. The result was a complete, refined automatic watch that felt restrained rather than technical, yet still carried the master's recognisable signature.
The Divine also holds a special place in the brand's catalogue as the first model offered set with diamonds, making it the founding piece of F.P. Journe's Jewellery Collection and a favourite of clients who wanted both haute horlogerie and a genuine jewellery object. It was initially produced in 36mm and 38mm cases. The movement itself evolved quickly: the earliest 2003 pieces used a brass calibre 1300, and from 2004 Journe famously switched to making his movements in 18K rose gold, giving the calibre 1300.2. A further refinement in 2007 brought the calibre 1300.3 with a self-locking unidirectional winding rotor, which remains the basis of the watch today.
In 2016 the Octa Divine was updated and enlarged, moving to 40mm and 42mm cases in 950 platinum and 18K red gold. Then in 2023 the line was redesigned again, this time aesthetically: the oval polished frame screwed to the dial was removed, the power-reserve display was simplified, and the freed dial space was decorated with guilloché, giving a more classical and versatile character. Across every generation the Octa Divine has remained an insider's choice, prized for its in-house automatic calibre, its long power reserve and its calm, balanced face. As the work of an independent manufacture, it is built in small numbers, which gives it a particular standing among collectors.
