Brand History

The F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance, introduced in 2000, was a genuine world premiere: the first wristwatch to harness the physical phenomenon of resonance. It was only the second watch from Journe's young manufacture, following the Tourbillon Souverain. François-Paul Journe, the celebrated independent watchmaker from the Jura, drew on the 18th-century research of Antide Janvier and Abraham-Louis Breguet, who had observed that two pendulum clocks placed side by side would gradually fall into synchronised rhythm. Journe spent years adapting this idea to the wrist; his first resonance pocket-watch dates to 1983, and it took fifteen more years of refinement before he could present a working wristwatch.

The principle is elegant. The Résonance carries two independent balance wheels mounted close together on the same plate. As they oscillate, they influence one another through natural resonance until they beat in sympathy. If a shock or wrist movement speeds one balance up, the other slows by the same amount, and the shared energy pulls them back into agreement, cancelling the disturbance. The dial reflects this twin architecture with two symmetrical sub-dials and the maker's "Invenit et Fecit" signature, giving the watch a dual-time-zone display together with small seconds and a power-reserve indicator.

The earliest pieces are the most coveted. The 2000 Souscription series was numbered 1 to 20, housed in a 38mm platinum case with a rhodium-plated brass caliber 1499. Brass movements were used only until around 2004, when Journe switched to his signature 18k rose gold plates and bridges; the rare brass examples, of which only around two thousand were made across all his models, are among the most sought-after watches he has produced. A larger 40mm case joined the 38mm in the mid-2000s.

The model evolved through several distinct references. The Ref. RN, known as Resonance Nouveau, ran from 2004 to 2010 with the gold movement. The Ref. RT of 2010 replaced the left sub-dial with a digital orbital 24-hour display and won the Grand Complication prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève, on the award's own tenth anniversary. The Ref. RTA of 2019 returned to a symmetrical analogue layout, and in 2020, for the model's 20th anniversary, Journe unveiled an all-new caliber 1520 with a single barrel, a differential and twin remontoirs d'égalité, offered in 40mm or 42mm. It remains the only wristwatch to use resonance without any mechanical transmission, and rare early examples now command very strong prices at auction. Across all of this, the Résonance is regarded as one of Journe's most signature and most collected creations.
