The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona was launched in 1963 for professional motor-racing drivers. It took its name from the Daytona International Speedway in Florida, where Rolex had been official timekeeper since 1962. The first reference, the 6239, paired a tri-compax chronograph layout, an external tachymetre bezel, and a manually wound Valjoux 72 movement. Curiously, it was not Rolex's most expensive watch, and for years it was one of the hardest Rolexes to sell.
The Daytona's legend began with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Newman's wife gave him a 6239 inscribed "Drive Carefully Me" on the caseback. He wore it for decades, and his "exotic dial" variant, with Art Deco sub-dial numerals and contrasting colourways, eventually became known as the "Paul Newman Daytona". Values exploded from the 1990s, culminating in Newman's personal 6239 selling for USD 17.8 million at Phillips in 2017.
In 1988 Rolex relaunched the Daytona. The new reference 16520 used a modified version of Zenith's legendary El Primero (Cal. 4030), with Rolex slowing the beat from 36,000 to 28,800 vph and adding its own rotor and escapement. This "Zenith Daytona" was the watch that turned waiting lists into a cultural phenomenon and converted the Daytona from racing tool into status icon.
In 2000 Rolex introduced its first fully in-house Daytona movement, the Cal. 4130, in reference 116520: a streamlined 201-part chronograph with 72 hours of power reserve and a vertical clutch. In 2016 the steel Daytona evolved into the 116500LN with a ceramic Cerachrom bezel, available in panda-white or black dials; both attracted multi-year waiting lists. In 2023 Rolex unveiled the 126500LN with the new Cal. 4131 and, for the first time on a steel Daytona, a transparent caseback.
Today the most sought-after Daytonas are the 16520 "Zenith", 116520 (black or white), 116500LN (especially the panda), and current 126500LN. On the vintage side, Paul Newman 6239/6241/6262/6263 references remain blue-chip collector pieces.
Bedesten Watches has sold authentic Rolex Daytonas in Istanbul since 1999. For 16520 Zenith, 116520, 116500LN black/white panda, 116508, and current 126500LN inventory, visit our Suadiye store or message us on WhatsApp +90 532 327 88 26.
