Omega Seamaster

Introduced1948

Brand History

The Omega Seamaster was launched in 1948 to mark Omega's 100th anniversary, making it the oldest line still in the brand's current collection. It grew directly out of the waterproof field watches Omega had supplied to the British armed forces during the Second World War. The earliest references, the CK 2518 with sub-seconds and the CK 2577 with a centre-seconds hand, were elegant steel or gold dress watches rather than hardcore divers, their water resistance ensured by then-novel O-ring gasket sealing intended for "town, sea and country."

The model became a serious tool watch in 1957, when Omega released the Seamaster 300 reference CK 2913 alongside the Speedmaster and Railmaster, the trio collectors now call the "Trilogy." With its 39mm steel case, Broad Arrow hands, lollipop seconds hand and Cal. 501 automatic, the CK 2913 was robust enough to be issued to navy divers, even though its testing equipment limited the certified rating to 200m despite the "300" on the dial, which is part of why it is so sought-after by vintage collectors today.

Deep-saturation diving pushed Omega further. Working with the French commercial-diving firm COMEX, Omega unveiled the Seamaster 600 "Ploprof" (PLOngeur PROFessionnel, reference 166.077) at Basel in 1969, reaching retail in 1971. Its monobloc steel case, locking crown and red bezel-release button made it one of the most over-engineered dive watches ever, tested well beyond its 600m rating.

The Seamaster's modern fame arrived in 1993 with the Diver 300M, defined by its blue wave dial, scalloped bezel and helium escape valve. The quartz reference 2541.80.00 appeared on Pierce Brosnan's wrist in GoldenEye (1995), beginning Omega's lasting partnership with James Bond; the automatic chronometer 2531.80.00 (Cal. 1120) followed in the later Brosnan films. The family then expanded with the dressier Aqua Terra in 2002 and the high-performance Planet Ocean 600M in 2005, the latter debuting with references such as the 45.5mm 2200.50.00 powered by the Cal. 2500 co-axial. In 2018 the Diver 300M was redesigned around the 42mm 210.30 series with a ceramic bezel and Co-Axial Master Chronometer movements.

Collectors prize the Seamaster for its breadth: vintage grails like the CK 2913 and Ploprof, the GoldenEye Bond references, and modern Master Chronometer divers that combine antimagnetic, METAS-certified movements with everyday wearability and strong value, appealing to first-time buyers and seasoned collectors alike.
