The Omega De Ville began life not as a standalone line but as a refined offshoot of the Seamaster. In the early 1960s Omega used the name "Seamaster De Ville" for the slimmer, dressier versions of its sports watches, combining a clean profile with the brand's proven thin movements. The dressier identity proved so popular that in 1967 Omega launched the De Ville as a collection in its own right, dedicated entirely to elegant, classically styled timepieces with shorter lugs and a lower profile. From the outset the De Ville stood for restraint: simple dials, slender cases and first-rate calibres rather than diving bezels or chronograph pushers.
What sets the De Ville apart in Omega's catalogue is its role as the brand's stage for horological firsts. In 1994, to mark Omega's centenary, the De Ville Central Tourbillon arrived as the world's first wristwatch with a tourbillon mounted in the centre of the dial, powered by the calibre 2600 and designed by watchmaker Maurice Grimm. Five years later the line made even greater history: the 1999 De Ville Co-Axial Limited Edition (reference 5931.81.00, 999 pieces in gold) became the first commercially produced wristwatch to use George Daniels' Co-Axial escapement, via the calibre 2500. That escapement, reducing friction and lubrication needs, went on to define modern Omega across the entire range.
The De Ville has since branched into clearly defined families. The Prestige (reference 424 family) is the accessible classic dress watch in quartz and Co-Axial chronometer forms. The Hour Vision, launched in 2007 (reference 431 family), introduced the in-house calibre 8500 and a distinctive sapphire inner case band that lets light reach the movement from the side. In 2014 Omega revived the Trésor name, first used in 1949, with slim 40mm cases and the manual-winding Master Co-Axial calibre 8511 resisting magnetic fields beyond 15,000 gauss. In 2020 the De Ville Tourbillon Numbered Edition (reference 529 family) became the first antimagnetic central-tourbillon wristwatch, a Co-Axial Master Chronometer in precious metals.
Collectors are drawn to the De Ville for exactly this blend of quiet elegance and genuine technical significance. Vintage manual-wind pieces from the 1960s and 1970s offer accessible, beautifully proportioned dress watches, while modern Prestige, Hour Vision and Trésor models deliver Omega's most advanced movements in understated cases. Bedesten Watches has sold authentic Omega watches in Istanbul since 1999 and offers a rotating selection of pre-owned De Ville references across the Prestige, Hour Vision and Trésor lines.
