Omega Constellation

Introduced1952

Brand History

The Omega Constellation is the brand's flagship chronometer line and one of the most decorated names in mid-century watchmaking. It grew out of Omega's success in precision timekeeping: in 1948 the brand launched the "Centenary" to mark its 100th anniversary, and in 1952 that idea matured into the Constellation, a series-produced automatic chronometer named after the star-studded sky and crowned with a medallion of the Geneva Observatory on its caseback — a nod to Omega's record-breaking results in observatory precision trials.

Early Constellations are defined by two features collectors prize: the "pie-pan" dial, whose faceted outer edge slopes down like an upside-down pie dish, and the observatory medallion with its eight stars. Through the 1950s and 1960s the Constellation became Omega's prestige chronometer, offered in steel, gold-capped and solid gold cases with dauphine hands and a reputation for accuracy that rivalled anything from Switzerland.

In 1982 the Constellation was completely reimagined as the "Manhattan". Designed by Carol Didisheim, it introduced the four claws — the "griffes" — that grip the crystal at the sides of the case, originally a functional way to hold the gasket and crystal under pressure, and an integrated bracelet. That design, with its half-moon claws, has defined the Constellation ever since and made it instantly recognisable.

The line continued to evolve with Omega's technical advances, adopting the Co-Axial escapement and, with the 2015 Globemaster, the Master Chronometer certification for antimagnetic resistance to 15,000 gauss — fittingly, the Globemaster brought back the pie-pan dial and observatory medallion, closing the circle to 1952. Today the Constellation spans elegant everyday chronometers for both men and women, and vintage pie-pan examples remain a smart entry into serious watch collecting.
