The Royal Oak Jumbo began with reference 5402ST in 1972. Gérald Genta's 39 mm steel watch placed an octagonal bezel, visible screws, a Petite Tapisserie dial and an articulated integrated bracelet into one continuous piece of industrial design. Its slim caliber 2121 kept the case close to 7 mm thick. The size looked enormous by early-1970s standards, which is why collectors still use Audemars Piguet's original “Jumbo” nickname.
The 5402 appeared in lettered series, with early A-Series watches receiving particular attention, but originality matters more than a letter alone. Dial typography, AP signature position, date disc, bracelet configuration, case geometry and movement number all need to agree with the production period. The 14802 Jubilee and very scarce 15002 revived the formula before the 15202 arrived in 2000. For twenty-two years, the 15202 preserved the same essential proportions and the historic 2121 architecture while dial and case variants evolved.
In 2022 the 16202 replaced the 15202 for the Royal Oak's fiftieth anniversary. It retained the 39 mm silhouette but introduced caliber 7121, a modern movement designed to fit the extra-thin brief. Steel, gold, platinum and openworked executions now make “Jumbo” a family rather than one reference. On a pre-owned example, inspect the bezel's flat planes, sharp transitions, bracelet taper and dial originality: aggressive refinishing can erase the geometry that gives the watch its character. Service documentation and correct links are especially valuable because replacement components and short bracelets materially affect collectability.
