Brand History

Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak Concept in 2002 for the Royal Oak's thirtieth anniversary. The first Concept Watch, reference 25980AI, used an alacrite case with a titanium bezel and was limited to 150 pieces. Its exposed tourbillon, linear power-reserve display and dynamograph treated the movement as part of the exterior architecture. The watch did not simply enlarge a Royal Oak; it turned the octagonal vocabulary into a platform for experimental materials and mechanisms.

Later Concept models explored carbon, ceramic and increasingly complex titanium cases. GMT tourbillons, lap timers and openworked flying tourbillons placed controls and indicators directly into the visual structure. The line also became a laboratory for sound: the Royal Oak Concept Supersonnerie applied Audemars Piguet's acoustic research to a minute repeater whose case construction helps project the chime.

Reference 26650TI added an automatic split-seconds flyback chronograph and GMT, while collaborations such as the limited KAWS edition pushed the display into sculptural territory. These are large, complicated watches with reference-specific case parts, crowns, pushers, straps and clasps. On the secondary market, confirm the exact limited-edition number and complete set, inspect ceramic or carbon edges under magnification, and test every function with a specialist familiar with the caliber. Factory service history is unusually important: apparent cosmetic similarity between Concept references can hide major differences in mechanism, component availability and future service cost.
