The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is the zero point of the luxury sports watch category. In the early 1970s, the Swiss watch industry was facing existential crisis under pressure from Japanese quartz watches; hundreds of manufactures closed during the so-called Quartz Crisis. AP was fighting for survival. In 1971, AP's board commissioned the young designer Gérald Genta to create a watch that could save the brand: steel, but priced like a gold watch. It was a concept never seen in the category.
According to legend, Genta sketched the design overnight after the brief arrived, drawing inspiration from old divers' helmets and the porthole design of the British Royal Navy battleship HMS Royal Oak. The octagonal bezel, eight hexagonal screws, integrated bracelet, and embossed "Petite Tapisserie" dial: all these details shocked the industry when AP unveiled the Royal Oak reference 5402 at Basel Fair 1972. The launch package paired a 39mm steel case, a 7mm slim profile, the automatic caliber 2121, and a CHF 3,300 list price in 1972 — unprecedented for a steel watch at the time.
Initial reactions were mixed. Critics joked the "Royal Oak" should be called a "cheese plate"; the first years saw slow sales. But the 5402 "A-Series" (first 1,000 pieces) eventually became the defining design of the modern luxury sports watch. AP expanded the Royal Oak family in the 1980s with the 14790 and in the 1990s with the 15000 series. Introduced in 2000, the 15202ST "Jumbo Extra-Thin" was produced for 22 years as the purest continuation of the 5402 and became the collection's purist reference.
The 15400ST (41mm, caliber 3120) arrived in 2012, followed by the 15500ST in 2019 (41mm, new caliber 4302, refined dial and indices). 2022 was the Royal Oak's 50th anniversary, and AP released the most comprehensive celebration in the model's history: the 15202ST was retired and replaced by the 16202ST (new caliber 7121 with 50th anniversary rotor). The 15510ST became the current Jumbo Selfwinding, and the 26240ST was introduced as the new-generation Chronograph (in-house caliber 4401 flyback). The chronograph lineage (26331ST in 2017-2021, 26240 from 2021, and the Offshore-Diver 15710) anchors AP's modern sports-watch catalogue.
