The Patek Philippe Aquanaut launched in 1997 as Patek's effort to reach a younger collector audience. The brand wanted a more casual, entry-level sports watch sitting beneath the Nautilus in the lineup. The design retained the Nautilus's softened octagonal case DNA but introduced new elements: rounded edges, an embossed checkerboard dial pattern, and the era's most innovative feature, the "Tropical" composite rubber strap.
The first reference, the 5060A, was 36mm in steel with a black embossed dial and the now-iconic Tropical strap. Patek's proprietary composite blended the durability of vulcanized rubber with a textile-like feel, and the strap quickly influenced late-1990s sport-watch design. The bracelet version 5060/1A followed, with derivatives 5065 and 5066 appearing in subsequent years.
In 2007, Patek introduced the current-generation reference 5167. At 40mm steel with the caliber 324 S C automatic movement, an upgraded Tropical strap system, and a deeper embossed dial, the 5167/1A became the foundation of the modern Aquanaut collection. The rose gold 5167R followed in 2013. For the collection's 20th anniversary in 2017, Patek released two key references: the 500-piece limited 5650G "Advanced Research" with patented silicon components and a compliant bracelet mechanism, and the long-awaited 5168G "Jumbo" 42mm in white gold.
The 5968A, launched in 2018, was the first chronograph Aquanaut, using the CH 28-520 C flyback caliber with orange contrast details. The 5269 Luce ladies' line with diamond bezel followed in 2019. The Aquanaut's real collecting peak arrived post-2021: when production of the Nautilus 5711/1A ended, collectors pivoted to the Aquanaut 5167 as the natural steel Patek sports-watch alternative. In 2024, the steel 5260/1300A annual-calendar chronograph elevated the collection's complication ceiling to new heights.
