Brand History

The IWC Ingenieur was born in 1955 as a watch for the technical age. Its name — German for "engineer" — signalled its purpose: a precise, robust, antimagnetic automatic for professionals working around electrical and magnetic fields. The original reference 666 used Albert Pellaton's ingenious bidirectional winding system and, crucially, a soft-iron inner case that shielded the movement from magnetism, making the Ingenieur one of the most genuinely useful tool watches of its era alongside the Rolex Milgauss and Omega Railmaster.

The watch's defining moment came in 1976, when IWC asked Gérald Genta — the designer behind the Royal Oak and the Nautilus — to reimagine it. Genta gave the Ingenieur SL (reference 1832) an integrated bracelet, a robust case and a bezel secured by five visible screws, turning the engineer's tool into a luxury steel sports watch. Often called the "Jumbo" for its generous size, the SL is now one of the most collectible vintage IWCs and the design DNA that the modern Ingenieur draws on.

Through the 2000s IWC reinterpreted the Ingenieur in various forms, including high-antimagnetic and motorsport-themed pieces, and in 2013 a redesign brought back Genta's styling cues. The most significant recent chapter came in 2023, when IWC returned the Ingenieur to its roots with the Ingenieur Automatic 40 (IW328901): a faithful revival of Genta's 1976 design, with the integrated bracelet, the five functional bezel screws and a 40mm case housing the in-house caliber 32111. The relaunch was widely praised for finally giving the Ingenieur the clear identity it had sometimes lacked.

For collectors, the Ingenieur offers a Genta-designed integrated sports watch with genuine antimagnetic heritage — a distinctive alternative to the more obvious choices in the genre.
