The Cartier Tank is one of the most influential designs in the history of timekeeping. It was conceived by Louis Cartier in 1917, grandson of founder Louis-François Cartier, at the height of the First World War. Legend holds that Louis took inspiration from the Renault tanks then appearing on the Western Front, translating their top-down silhouette into a watch: a rectangular case framed by two vertical bars, the brancards, that recall the treads of an armoured vehicle while flowing seamlessly into the strap. An early prototype was presented to American General John Pershing, and the watch reached its first private clients when commercial production began in 1919.
That first model, known today as the Tank Normale, broke sharply with an era still dominated by round pocket watches and ornate Art Nouveau styling. Its clean Roman numerals, blued sword-shaped hands, railroad minute track and beaded crown set with a blue cabochon established a design language Cartier still uses more than a century later. The Tank Cintrée followed in 1921 with a dramatically elongated, gently curved case, and the Tank Louis Cartier refined the line with its rounded brancards and slim profile, becoming for many the purest expression of the design.
The Tank evolved continuously through the twentieth century. In 1977 the Les Must de Cartier line brought the Tank to a wider audience in gold-plated vermeil and quartz, a decision that helped the maison survive the quartz era and seeded today's steel Tank Must. The Tank Américaine arrived in 1989 with a curved, water-resistant case and automatic movements, and the Tank Française in 1996 introduced an integrated link bracelet inspired by tank treads, a model closely associated with Diana, Princess of Wales. The accessible Tank Solo debuted in 2004, the bolder Tank Anglaise in 2012 with its crown tucked into the brancard, and the masculine Tank MC in 2013, named for Manufacture Cartier and its in-house movement. Collectors prize the Tank for its instantly recognisable geometry, its cultural cachet worn by everyone from Andy Warhol to Jackie Kennedy, and the breadth of references that span vintage hand-wound rarities to current production.
