The A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 is the watch that announced the rebirth of German haute horlogerie. After the original Glashütte firm, founded by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in 1845, was expropriated under East German rule, his great-grandson Walter Lange re-registered the name in December 1990. Working with industry strategist Günter Blümlein, Walter Lange spent four years developing a modern collection. On 24 October 1994, at the Royal Palace in Dresden, the brand unveiled its first four wristwatches of the new era, all in yellow gold; the Lange 1 was the star.
Its design broke every convention of the dress watch. Instead of a symmetrical layout, the Lange 1 placed the hours-and-minutes dial off to the left, a running seconds sub-dial and power-reserve indicator at lower right, and a bold outsize date at the upper right, all arranged so that no element overlaps another. The outsize date is the model's signature, a tribute to the five-minute clock above the stage of Dresden's Semper Opera House, whose double-aperture display Ferdinand Adolph Lange had helped build with his master Gutkaes. The asymmetric composition follows the golden ratio, giving the dial a balance that has never looked dated.
Under the dial, the first-generation caliber L901.0 introduced twin mainspring barrels for a 72-hour power reserve, a hand-engraved balance cock, gold chatons and the three-quarter plate that defines Glashütte tradition. The 38.5mm case, with its separately finished notched lugs, became instantly recognisable. Across two decades the line grew to include yellow gold, white gold, pink gold and platinum, with celebrated variants such as the 101.027 blue dial, the 101.035 'Darth' in platinum with a black dial, and the rare grey-dial 101.030.
In 2015 A. Lange & Söhne reworked the Lange 1 with the new in-house caliber L121.1, keeping the 38.5mm case and iconic layout but adding an instantaneously jumping outsize date and a freely oscillating balance spring. The second generation carries the 191-series references, including 191.021 in yellow gold, 191.025 in platinum and 191.032 in pink gold. The Lange 1 remains the cornerstone of the brand and one of the most respected designs in modern watchmaking.
